August Muth
LIGHT-MIND
May 7-30, 2015

For more than 30 years August Muth has been an internationally exhibiting artist and pioneer in the exploration of light through holography. His intention is to assimilate the science, philosophy, and perceptual psychology of holography in manifesting light and space. The elusive images within his holograms provoke speculation about what is real and what is illusion. Colors in Muth’s work are created in light and altered by the viewer as they move around the pieces. As he states: “Light is my medium. Color is my muse.”

At his studio, The Light Foundry in Santa Fe, New Mexico, Muth has developed patentable holographic techniques and materials—which he freely shares to further evolution of the field. Part research laboratory, part workshop, part studio, The Light Foundry also creates holograms for, and collaborates with, other artists.

Muth studied art and physics at the University of New Mexico, the University of Houston, and the University of Texas, Austin. His exploration of holography began at New York’s Museum of Holography under Fred Unterseher. In 1985 Muth built his first holographic studio and began to focus his interest on the relationship between light, space and time. In 1994 he opened The Light Foundry in Santa Fe, NM where he continues this work. He lives in Santa Fe, NM.
