Gabrielle Garland New Paintings Jan 2 - Jan 30, 2014

Gabrielle Garland’s new series of ten paintings comprise her first Portland show. She paints scenes of interior spaces that feel unexpectedly exposed, as if their inhabitants have just left.

Memory is integral to Garland’s process. She works from photographs documenting her experience of a space. She carefully controls focus points and field of vision to draw us into the work, toying with our sense of perspective to create “a kind of virtual collage allowing many different systems of order to exist in a single piece.”

Gabrielle Garland holds a BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and an MFA from the University of Chicago. Her work has been exhibited widely throughout the US, and will be shown at Now Chicago, an exhibition of contemporary Chicago artists coinciding with the 2014 Biennale of Sydney, Australia. She lives and works in New York City.
